Announcing Our First Place Award Winning Photo!

Ali+Walter-400

Today we’re sharing something truly amazing…and we’re celebrating a HUGE accomplishment!  We can’t even put into words how proud we are to announce that one of our images has taken FIRST PLACE in the annual Shoot and Share Photo Contest.  26,433 images were entered into this contest by professional photographers and over 5 million blind votes were cast, and we don’t know what to say except that we are completely blown away!!  Congratulations to our wonderful couple Ali+Walter and their bridal party, who are featured in the winning photo!

The winners of the contest were announced this year at United, a photography conference that we were dying to attend but couldn’t due to baby boy #2.  Prior to the conference, all we knew was that one of our images had finished in the top 5, but we had no idea what place we had actually gotten…so we sat by Facebook as the magazine was released and the winners were announced…

And then this happened…

When it comes to photography, one of my favorite quotes is this gem by Theodore Roosevelt: “Comparison is the thief of joy.”

Because it’s true.  As artists these days (and especially because we have so many amazing photographer friends), it’s nearly impossible not to compare yourself ourselves to others.  To beat yourself up over how someone else captured that amazing angle or composed that perfect shot.  And because we practically live our lives through social media these days, in the words of Steven Furtick, “The reason why we struggle with insecurity is we compare our behind the scenes with everyone else’s highlight reel.”  With the perfection that FB and Pinterest exude, sometimes we wonder if we’re the only ones with dirty clothes piled on the bathroom floor for a week that need washed, or with a desk that’s buried in paperwork, or who stayed in our pajamas so long the other morning while editing photos that there was no reason to put on real clothes, or with envy over other people’s work.  And while we wish we could say something like “We expected to win first place,” or “We feel like we’re totally on par with the other photographers who did so well in this contest,”  we have to be honest:  Even now, holding the Shoot and Share magazine in our hands with our photo prominently displayed on page 13, intertwined with images by some of our photography idols and biggest inspirations, we are completely blown away.  We see our photo in the company of artists that we’ve looked up to for years and years, and it takes our breath away, makes us jump up and down, and gives us butterflies.  What a humbling and incredible feeling.

Sometimes, when you’re running your own business, it’s hard to remember to celebrate the victories.  There’s always more to be done:  Always more emails to write, photos to edit, techniques to practice, business tasks that need completed…always improvements that need to be made and growth to be had.  But today we’re taking a step back, breathing it all in, and celebrating the victories and successes.  Because these past few months we have had more victories than we can count!  We’ve booked more weddings than ever for 2014 (and 2015 is already starting to fill up!), we’ve felt more thankful than ever for all of the referrals from our past clients and favorite vendors, we’ve pulled off styled shoots that we could previously only dream of (you’ll see more of our work published soon!) – and somehow after countless sleepless nights, insane amounts of work, and setting big crazy goals, this little dream that began so many years ago has become a reality.  So thank you to everyone (past, present, and future) who has helped to make our dream a reality.  We’ve never felt so humbled, ecstatic, and blown away than we do today as we admire our first place photo…and we owe it all to you.  Love, R+A
