We don’t do this very often on the blog, but today I wanted to share a video with you guys that really resonated with me, as well as with the members of our Business Coaching Group for Photographers

Let’s talk about the fear of failure for a minute…

I randomly had the opportunity to work with Sara Blakely (CEO of Spanx) on a photoshoot last year….so I got to make a connection with this super successful woman (and as a result I have a closet full of free Spanx that have definitely come in handy after having 3 kids….!). Anyway, she is a true entrepreneur – she’s the kind of person who fills the room with her presence and is an incredibly smart businesswoman….

I love this interview she did, I hope you’ll take a moment to watch it.

Business Insider: Spanx CEO On Failure from Eleanor Rigby on Vimeo.

We all have fears.  Most of those fears stem from a fear of failure.

We spend a lot of time coaching photographers, and this is what we constantly hear:  “I’m scared to raise my prices.  I’m scared to transition to in person sales. I’m scared to make changes to our branding.  I’m scared to try new lighting techniques.”

We’re all scared of SO many things when it comes to our businesses!

Back when I worked in the corporate world, I was surrounded by the status quo.  I probably heard the words “we’re doing it this way because this is how it’s ALWAYS been done” every single day.  There was little room for innovation. Little room for change. No space for trying new things.

Now that we run our own business, the freedom is crazy.  We can change our prices whenever we want.  We can try new things.  We can structure our packages differently from one day to the next.  If something doesn’t seem to be working, we can change it immediately.  We can innovate.  And in short, we have the freedom to fail.

Rick and I might be the weird/crazy ones, but we are CONSTANTLY changing things up and trying new things (both on the business side and on the technical photography side). Many of these things are behind the scenes.  And, truth be told, we fail all the time.  But I’m proud of those failures….because it means that we are getting out there and innovating and trying new things and continuing to push ourselves.

Because I am a perfectionist to a fault, I HATE the idea of failure. I hate that feeling of not knowing how something is going to pan out.  I studied physics and nuclear engineering for my undergrad – and I’ve always liked numbers and facts and solvable problems.  It’s the grey area that’s always been tough for me.

Rick and I have spent the past week trying to launch a new project, and in the process we’ve been sitting here in our studio literally failing each day for the past 8 days to get this thing setup exactly how we envisioned.  We’ve been putting all of our efforts into this new marketing tactic, so we’ve failed to blog regularly the past week, or to post on social media, or even answer all of our emails in a timely manner [gasp!].  Every time we try something new, we know we’re taking a bit of a risk.  But we also know that if we don’t succeed this first time, we can apply what we’ve learned in the process and get it right the next time.

Anyway, enough rambling! My point of this post is: I WANT YOU TO SET A GOAL THIS WEEK TO FAIL AT SOMETHING.

Do you know you need to raise your pricing to be profitable but are afraid you’ll lose a booking? Do it. Try it. Fail at it and learn from it.

Do you know you need to figure out how to use off camera flash? Get out there and fail at it over and over and over again until you get it right.

Without our failures we would never see our successes.

If you never push yourself outside of your comfort zone, nothing is going to change in your business. You’ll look back a year from now and wonder why you didn’t make the changes you needed to make earlier. You’ll wonder why you let yourself flounder for so long in this in-between.  So, get out there and fail.

Love,

A

Garrard Landing Engagement Photos : Rick+Anna Photography

Happy Monday!  Today’s a fun day on the blog because we get to share Erin+Harrison’s engagement session with you – and it includes the second cutest puppy ever (because, obviously, our yellow lab Sophie takes the top spot)!  We lucked out with the most beautiful glowy evening light at Garrard Landing Park in Roswell, GA – which is the perfect engagement session location with its fields, riverfront, and covered bridge/creek area – we loved all of the different looks that we were able to grab all in one location!

Erin+Harrison are simply made for each other, and we had so much fun strolling the park with them and getting to know them – we already can’t wait for their Roswell Mill wedding next year!  Enjoy!

Atlanta Photography Workshop: Rick+Anna Photography

UPDATE: THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT!

This morning we have an exciting annoucement!  As you guys know, we’ve been hosting group styled shoots in Atlanta this year in coordination with the fabulous eMBee Events, and we love the little community that we’ve built in the process….it’s been so fun to connect with so many photographers in person, to encourage them, to shoot alongside them, and to help them stretch their creativity and build their portfolios (see the behind the scenes of our first shoot here)…and these shoots didn’t start out as workshops at all, just a chance for everyone to get together and shoot, but we’ve been bombarded with feedback requesting that we add some instruction – so we’ve decided to make some changes and add a workshop element for the next one!!  We’ll be providing instruction on posing, lighting, and shooting for publication.

With that being said, photographers – we hope that you’ll join us on August 1st at Ventanas Atlanta for a curated workshop, a stunning shoot styled by Savannah Kilpatrick, and camaraderie over a delicious catered meal at the end.  Registration will open on Friday morning for our private Business Coaching Group, and open to the public (if it’s not sold out!) on Monday.  Limited to 25 photographers.  Can’t wait to see you there!

Here’s the mood board for the shoot by Savannah Kilpatrick:

Atlanta Persian Wedding Photographer: Rick+Anna Photography

Helen+Stephen’s wedding was, quite simply, a dream to photograph.  One of our favorite things about their day (other than the two of them, of course!) was that Stephen did almost all of the wedding planning himself (with his vision executed on the wedding day by the amazing team at Eventscapes Atlanta), and we loved that he took the reigns and made Helen’s dream wedding a reality.  Each time we have the opportunity to photograph a Persian wedding, we know that it will not only be stylistically beautiful, but that it is going to be an exceptionally FUN day….and we love how they brought in elements of Persian culture, while keeping the decor lush and traditional – but most of all we loved the JOY that Helen+Stephen brought to the day!  They wanted to keep the wedding small, but to really throw the wedding of their dreams – so they put all of their love into ensuring that the guests had a fantastic and fun day and that the food, decor, and music were absolutely perfect…and it truly was.  There was never a moment that Helen+Stephen stopped smiling all day, and that joy filled the air throughout their portraits, their ceremony, and as they danced into the night with their closest family and friends.

Helen+Stephen, we can’t thank you enough for choosing us to photograph your love, and for the friendship that we’ve built in the process.  We wish you all the joy and love in the world as you embark on this new journey as husband and wife.  Love, R+A

Atlanta Photography Group: Rick+Anna Photography

Yesterday we shared some of our favorite photos from our recent “Southern Jewels” styled shoot, and today we wanted to share some behind the scenes highlights!  We love this group of people so much!  When we picked up and moved our family and business across the country from Seattle to Atlanta last year, we had no idea what the local wedding industry or photography community would be like.  We left a super-supportive group of friends in Seattle, and we were worried that we wouldn’t find the same type of community and encouragement in our new city.  It’s scary trying to grow your business from scratch in a new place, especially when we rely on our photography 100% to support our family (and our three boys are 4 years and younger and they already eat like teenagers, haha!!!)….but our fears turned out to be irrational and short-lived because we’ve been welcomed into the Atlanta photography community with welcome arms from the moment we arrived.  It’s such an incredible industry that we’re in, where our biggest “competitors” become our biggest cheerleaders and supporters, and vice versa.

As I mentioned in yesterday’s blog post, we’ve been thinking about hosting group styled shoots for months, so seeing everything come to life in May was so fun for us.  Our vision for this shoot was to create an opportunity for a group of vendors to collaborate with a large group of wedding professionals and create something really unique for their portfolios – and for our local photography community to come together for a day of shooting, learning, and networking to grow their own businesses….and when the 25 seats sold out in the first minute that registration was open, we knew that this was going to be something special.  Enjoy this behind the scenes look at the day…

Thank you so much to the awesome creative team who collaborated with us for vision for this shoot and made it happen!
